If any comic has a claim to have truly reinvigorated the genre then The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller--known recently for his excellent Sin City series and, previously, for his superb rendering of the blind superhero Daredevil--is probably the supreme contender. Batman represented all that was wrong in comics and Miller set himself a tough task taking on the camp crusader and turning this laughable, innocuous children's cartoon character into a hero for our times. In his introduction the great Alan Moore (V for Vendetta, Swamp Thing, the arguably peerless Watchmen) argues that only someone of Miller's stature could have done this. Batman is a character known well beyond the confines of the comic world (as are his retinue) and so reinventing him, while keeping his limiting core essentials intact, was a huge task.

Miller went far beyond the call of duty. The Dark Knight is a success on every level. Firstly it does keep the core elements of the Batman myth intact, with Robin, Alfred the butler, Commissioner Gordon and the old roster of villains, present yet brilliantly subverted. Secondly the artwork is fantastic--detailed, sometimes claustrophobic, psychotic. Lastly it's a great story: Gotham City is a hell on earth, streetgangs roam but there are no heroes. Decay is ubiquitous. Where is a hero to save Gotham? It is 10 years since the last recorded sighting of the Batman. And things have got worse than ever. Bruce Wayne is close to being a broken man but something is keeping him sane: the need to see change and the belief that he can orchestrate some of that change. Batman is back. Selten ist ein Roman mit so viel Vorschusslorbeeren an den Start gegangen: American Gods wird als Meisterwerk eines neuen Stephen King gefeiert, als Schaffenszenit eines Autors, der mit seiner Sandman-Comicserie ein ganzes Genre neu definiert hat. Dabei hat sich Neil Gaiman mit seinen beiden ersten Romanen nicht eben mit Ruhm bekleckert. Niemalsland ist eine nur mäßig inspirierte Umsetzung einer BBC-Fernsehserie und Sternwanderer eine fantasievolle Hommage an Hope Mirrlees' Klassiker Flucht ins Feenland.

American Gods spielt da schon in einer anderen Liga. Hauptfigur ist Shadow, eine eher zwiespältige Gestalt, die nach einer dreijährigen Gefängnisstrafe in die Freiheit entlassen wird, nur um sich mit dem Tod seiner Frau und seines besten Freundes konfrontiert zu sehen, die ein Verhältnis miteinander hatten. Notgedrungen nimmt er einen Job bei einem merkwürdigen alten Mann an, der sich "Wednesday" nennt. Wednesday entpuppt sich als Inkarnation des nordischen Gottes Odin und ist nur einer von zahlreichen übermächtigen Wesen, denen Shadow auf seiner Reise durch das Herz von Amerika begegnet.

Im Laufe des Romans stellt sich heraus, dass der nordamerikanische Kontinent nicht nur die Heimat von Menschen aus der ganzen Welt geworden ist, sondern auch von Güttern aus den unterschiedlichsten Mythologien und Religionen. Wie schon bei Sandman zaubert Neil Gaiman mit großer Virtuosität Figuren und Geschichten aus allen Kontinenten aufs Tableau und lässt seine Leser eine ihnen bekannte Welt mit völlig neuen Augen sehen.

American Godsüberzeugt von der ersten bis zur letzten Seite -- liebevoll gezeichnete Protagonisten, eine spannende und vielschichtige Handlung, unaufdringliche Kritik am Selbstbild der USA und ihrer Bewohner. Allerdings ist der Roman auch eindeutig das Werk eines Briten, der einen Blick auf die ehemalige Kolonie wirft, die sich längst zur Weltmacht aufgeschwungen hat. Entsprechend sind die Vergleiche mit Stephen King und anderen US-Bestsellerautoren zwar schmeichelhaft, aber unangemessen.

An der deutschen Ausgabe wiederum stört nicht nur die reißerische Aufmachung, sondern vor allem die Entscheidung von Verlag und Übersetzer, Titel und Namen im Original stehen zu lassen, eine Unsitte, die aus Filmsynchronisierungen nur allzu bekannt ist. Nichtsdestotrotz: American Gods erfüllt die hohen Erwartungen und dürfte bald zu jener kleinen Zahl fantastischer Romane gehören, die als Messlatte für das ganze Genre gelten. --Felix Darwin

The use of language here is impeccable, and it is wedded to a surreal narrative that brings out the most quirky and unsettling aspects of Gaiman's imagination. Forget Gaiman the Guru: just enjoy Gaiman the consummate writer:

There was a flash of lightning so bright it fell like a blow to his eyes, transforming the world into an intense panorama of image and after-image. Shadow gets out of prison early when his wife is killed in a car crash. At a loss, he takes up with a mysterious character called Wednesday, who is much more than he appears. In fact, Wednesday is an old god, once known as Odin the All-father, who is roaming America rounding up his forgotten fellows in preparation for an epic battle against the upstart deities of the Internet, credit cards, television, and all that is wired. Shadow agrees to help Wednesday, and they whirl through a psycho-spiritual storm that becomes all too real in its manifestations. For instance, Shadow's dead wife Laura keeps showing up, and not just as a ghost--the difficulty of their continuing relationship is by turns grim and darkly funny, just like the rest of the book.

Armed only with some coin tricks and a sense of purpose, Shadow travels through, around, and underneath the visible surface of things, digging up all the powerful myths Americans brought with them in their journeys to this land as well as the ones that were already here. Shadow's road story is the heart of the novel, and it's here that Gaiman offers up the details that make this such a cinematic book--the distinctly American foods and diversions, the bizarre roadside attractions, the decrepit gods reduced to shell games and prostitution. Im 11. Jahrhundert zierte The Moonstone, ein gelber Diamant, die Stirn eines vierhändigen indischen Gottes, der den Mond symbolisierte. Je nachdem, ob das Himmelsgestirn ab- oder zunahm, wurde auch der Schein des Edelsteins stärker oder schwächer. Auf abenteuerliche Weise gelangt The Moonstone in einen Dolchgriff und von da in die zarten Hände einer jungen, schönen Adligen. Dass die unrechtmäßige Entwendung des Steines für jeden, der mit ihm in Berührung kommt, fatale Folgen haben wird, hatte der Gott Vishnu bereits viele Jahre vorher prophezeit. So kann sich Lady Verinder Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts auch nur einen Tag an seinem faszinierenden Funkeln freuen. Am nächsten Morgen ist der Mondstein unauffindbar und die darauf einsetzende fieberhafte Suche hat für mehrere Beteiligte tödliche Folgen.

Der Engländer Wilkie Collins (1824-1889) hat mit dieser kunstvoll aufgebauten Handlung einen der ersten Detektivromane gestaltet. Immer wieder wird die Lösung des Falles hinausgezögert, gibt es neue Enthüllungen und verblüffende Wendungen. Nicht zuletzt der Kunstgriff, das Geschehen nacheinander von unterschiedlichsten Beteiligten erzählen zu lassen, erzeugt Spannung.

Dieser gekürzten Audiofassung leihen u.a. Clive Swift -- bekanntes englisches Komikertalent -- und Delia Paton (herrlich altjüngferlich als Miss Clack) ihre Stimmen. Die Aufnahme ist bis auf einige Musikzitate ohne Einsatz von akustischen Mitteln gestaltet. Das kann auf die Dauer für diejenigen, die mit der englischen Sprache nicht so sehr vertraut sind, anstrengend sein. Das Booklett weist zwar die Überschriften der jeweiligen Abschnitte auf, aber ein zusätzlicher Hinweis auf den Inhalt des Romans wäre hier angebracht gewesen. Für den versierten Englischsprecher ist The Moonstone ein spannendes Beispiel viktorianischer Erzählkunst im Original. Spieldauer: ca. 236 Minuten, 3 CDs.

Neverwhere's protagonist, Richard Mayhew, learns the hard way that no good deed goes unpunished. He ceases to exist in the ordinary world of London Above, and joins a quest through the dark and dangerous London Below, a shadow city of lost and forgotten people, places, and times. His companions are Door, who is trying to find out who hired the assassins who murdered her family and why; the Marquis of Carabas, a trickster who trades services for very big favors; and Hunter, a mysterious lady who guards bodies and hunts only the biggest game. London Below is a wonderfully realized shadow world, and the story plunges through it like an express passing local stations, with plenty of action and a satisfying conclusion. The story is reminiscent of Douglas Adams's The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, but Neil Gaiman's humor is much darker and his images sometimes truly horrific. Puns and allusions to everything from Paradise Lost to The Wonderful Wizard of Oz abound, but you can enjoy the book without getting all of them. Gaiman is definitely not just for graphic-novel fans anymore. --Nona Vero
